The ACT Government recently announced a new change to the Canberra Matrix, which is the scoring system used to rank who will be nominated for a 491 or 190 skilled visa.<\/span><\/p>\n

What does this change mean?<\/b><\/p>\n

In the past, you could only get an ACT nomination if your occupation was on the ACT critical skills list (or you hold a 457\/482 employer-sponsored visa).<\/span><\/p>\n

Now there is a new pathway for people who own a small business in the ACT called the \u201cSmall Business Owner\u201d category.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Does this mean I just need to own a small business to get PR in Canberra?<\/b><\/p>\n

No, sorry \u2013 it is not that easy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The benefit of the Small Business Owner stream is that you can apply for a 491\/190 nomination if you have an occupation that is <\/span>not<\/span> on the ACT list but you own a small business in Canberra.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Your score will be ranked and compete against other small business owners for a 491\/190 place.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Can any ACT small business qualify?<\/b><\/p>\n

No, small businesses that involve sub-tenancy, ride-share (e.g Uber), taxi, delivery or courier services do not qualify.<\/span><\/p>\n

You also can\u2019t use a business that has already been used to qualify for ACT nomination. This means you have to be careful when buying an ACT business to get a 491\/190 nomination, if the previous owners have already used that business to get a nomination in the past it means that you will not be eligible!<\/span><\/p>\n

All other businesses (sole traders\/partnerships\/companies) such as bakeries, grocers, cleaners, beauty, and spa, etc. will qualify.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If I am a small business owner do I still need to have a nominated occupation or skills assessment?<\/b><\/p>\n

Yes \u2013 you will still need to have a nominated occupation on the Australian Government\u2019s skilled occupation lists and obtain a positive skills assessment to qualify for a 491 or 190 visa.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
