A question we get asked a lot here at LEVISA is \u2013 <\/span>\u201cif I come to Australia on a visitor visa can I apply for a student visa to stay and study\u201d?<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n

The answer is yes!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As Australia gradually opens its international borders people will be able to come to Australia for a holiday, sightseeing or to visit family and friends.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To be eligible for a visitor visa (subclass 600) you will need to show the Department of Home Affairs that you genuinely intend to stay in Australia temporarily only and then return home.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This means you need to explain the purpose of your visa and show them that you have good reasons for returning home \u2013 for example, you have a job waiting for you, property and family etc. back in your country.<\/span><\/p>\n

While many people genuinely intend to return home as soon as their holiday is over \u2013 it doesn\u2019t mean you are not allowed to decide later that you would like to stay longer and study here.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For example, once you arrive you may hear great things about the education system and schools in Australia and decide that you would like to stay and study.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If this is the case then you can enroll at a college, TAFE or university in Australia and apply for a student visa (subclass 500). This visa allows students to stay to complete their course, which can be three years or more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To be eligible for a student visa you will also need to show you are a genuine temporary entrant. Similar to the visitor visa, this means that you need to demonstrate to Home Affairs that you intend to finish your studies in Australia and then return home to start your career.<\/span><\/p>\n

The good thing about applying for a student visa while onshore is that you will receive a Bridging Visa A, allows you to remain legally in Australia until a decision is made on your student visa application. Those who are already onshore on a visitor visa may also have a higher chance of successfully being granted a student visa.<\/span><\/p>\n
